World premiere by the Ballet Nacional de España on 22 April 2005 at the Teatro de la Zarzuela in Madrid.
"The choreography in Aires de Villa y Corte takes us back to Madrid in the 1800s, using dance to evoke contemporary scenes of palace life and the ways they related to the lives of common folk.
The eighteenth century "Escuela Bolera” or bolero school is a complex style that performers find challenging for its technical virtuosity and the added difficulty of having to combine music and dance with castanets. The popularity of this school spread across the limits of the genre itself and into classical ballet, whose many prominent interpreters and choreographers found it imperative to include some variation on this style in their repertoires. I have re-interpreted these codes of our dancing tradition in the present ballet, attempting to imbue them with a more contemporary air, in keeping with the most exacting aesthetic rigour."
