Bodas de Sangre

Premiere by the Ballet Nacional de España at the Teatro Juarez, Guanajuato (Mexico). Festival Cervantino de Guanajuato on 12 May 1979.

Choreographers

  • Antonio Gades

In 1974 Antonio Gades took a major step in Spanish dance when he presented his ballet Bodas de Sangre [Blood Wedding], based on Federico García Lorca’s play and adapted for ballet by Alfredo Mañas, who had collaborated with Antonio in Don Juan ten years earlier.

It was performed by the company, which at the time had barely more than twenty members.

Regarding the work, the dancer and choreographer said that “I wanted to pay tribute to the poet with Bodas de sangre and I had to go to Rome to be able to perform it. I come from a Mediterranean culture, which is a culture of jealousy, love, and death, which are not only present in dance but also in literature, painting, and other arts. The tragic sense of life is ever present. Bodas de sangre is a truly Spanish film, a tragedy steeped in folklore. I am always interested in Lorca’s work, mainly because he describes Andalusian people in depth, intensity, and intention".
