Premiered by the Ballet Nacional de España at the Teatro de la Zarzuela in Madrid on 28 October 1981.
Isaac Albéniz composed Suite Iberia at the end of his life, between 1905 and 1909. Eritaña is part of Cuaderno nº 4 and was premiered on 9 February 1909, in Paris, three months before he died. His source of inspiration are the sevillanas and it is named after the famous venta that stood next to Parque de María Luisa, in Seville. Included in the programme Homenaje a Albéniz, created by Antonio in 1960 for the Teatro del Liceo in Barcelona, and part of the choreography Suite Iberia, Eritaña draws on the steps of sevillanas boleras and the way they were danced in the 19th century. We must recall the words Claude Debussy had for the work of Albéniz -«music has never before reached such diverse expressions; your eyes close as if tired of having contemplated so many images»-, since these words also apply to the choreography Antonio designed, where the technical difficulty of its variations gives even more brilliance to the composer’s notes. We find in it all the necessary elements so that its translation into Spanish dance is absolutely natural. It is just a few, short minutes, but Eritaña is one of the essential works to understand Spanish dance on its path to excellence through choreographic stylisation.
