Premiered by the Ballet Nacional de España on 18 September 1996, Teatro de La Zarzuela, Madrid.
Our remembered Mariemma divided Spanish dance in four categories: escuela bolera, stylised dance, flamenco, and folklore. Of the four, the latter is currently the least favoured, in part due to a “modern” idea that wrongly connects our folklore with Franco’s regime, with its Coros and Danzas and its Sección Femenina. But the rich variety of Spanish folklore is not only the heart of our classical music and dance, but it is also an artistic expression of the first order when done carefully. In Romance Juanjo Linares, one of the major guardians of Spanish folklore in the past decades; and Paco Azorín, the top jota dancer, showed the best side of this branch of our dance. The Ballet Nacional presents Galicia, a powerful duo accompanied by a corps de ballet, a stylisation of the dance of this northwest region of Spain.
