Ties of blood can bring tragedy to a family when mixed with revenge. Electra could not forget her father’s murder and turned into a myth. In Murcia, on 16 November The Ballet Nacional de España starts its first season under the directorship of Rubén Olmo with this choreography by Antonio Ruz in collaboration with Olga Pericet.

They have both delved into different dance languages (contemporary, Spanish and flamenco) to bring to life Euripides’s tragedy in a contemporary, original version inspired by Spanish rural imagery.

They had the collaboration of Alberto Conejero, Premio Nacional de Literatura Dramática 2019, who pens the dramaturgy and the lyrics. They have managed to echo Lorca in this story about family feuds that opens and closes with a wedding and a death, in a sort of rite of passage that bonds passion and violence. A violence unleashed by Agamemnon when he kills one of his daughters; then, his wife kills him in revenge, leading to the retaliation of Electra and her brother. Electra is a tragedy driven by very strong, telluric feelings, like the love between parents and their offspring.

“I wanted to go on performing it because it is one of the most ambitious and avant-garde works created by the BNE in the past years, and I’d like audiences from other cities to have the chance to enjoy it”, said Rubén Olmo. “Also, Electra is an example of the kind of collaborative show I wish to stage. My intention as director of the Ballet Nacional de España is to invite the most talented present choreographers of Spanish dance.  I’d like to turn the BNE into the company all the new creators wish to work with”.

Electra features music by Pablo Martín Caminero, Moisés Sánchez and Diego Losada; costume design is by Rosa García Andújar, inspired by the rich heritage of traditional costumes from different Spanish regions; Paco Azorín took care of the stage design. In this show, the cast of the Ballet Nacional de España is joined by the flamenco voice of cantaora Sandra Carrasco as coryphaeus. Principal dancer Inmaculada Salomón plays the leading role and Antonio Najarro, BNE former director, plays the role of Aegisthus, the lover of Electra’s mother. With this staging, premiered in 2017, the BNE won the Premio Cerino, awarded by the specialised press at the Festival Internacional de Teatro Clásico de Mérida.

Electra is a full sensory experience. It appeals to all the senses, from the set design to lighting, music and, obviously, movement, and gets the viewer to feel intensely the strength and passion of this universal story.

The only performance of Electra in Murcia will be on 16 November at 9:00 pm at the Teatro Circo Murcia. Tickets can be bought at the box office and on the theatre’s website.
