The celebration of International Dance Day in 2020 coincided with the lockdown decreed by the Government against the Covid-19 pandemic, so Ballet Nacional de España artists had to dance in their homes and share their dance with fans through the social media. That period was really hard, both physically and mentally for our dancers and director Rubén Olmo, as they were away from the audience, their raison d’être. That is why, this year our wish is to give everybody the chance of watching us dance live to share our joy for having returned to the stage.
International Dance Day has been celebrated on 29 April since 1982. This date was chosen by the UNESCO’s International Dance Committee (ITI) as it is the date of birth of Jean-Georges Noverre (1727-1810), creator of modern ballet. In 2021, the German dancer Friedmann Vogel gave voice to the anxiety experienced by all the dancers when they are deprived from their raison d’être: inspiring the audience. “When all of a sudden, we aren’t allowed to perform anymore, with theatres closed and festivals cancelled, our worlds come to a standstill. No physical contact. No shows. No audiences. Never in recent history has the dance community been so collectively challenged to stay motivated, to find our raison d’être. Yet, it is precisely when something precious has been taken away from us that we truly appreciate how vital it is what we do, and how much dance means to society at large”. To celebrate this day, we broadcast live via our Twitter (@balletnacional), Facebook (@balletnacionaldeespana.oficial) and YouTube (@BalletNacionalEspana) channels the rehearsal of De lo flamenco. Homenaje a Mario Maya. This production, which is included in the show Invocación, was first performed at the Festival de Jerez in 2020 and it will soon be performed in Zaragoza and Pamplona. Rubén Olmo has added to the original show, premiered by Mario Maya in 1994, choreographies by Manolo Marín, Isabel Bayón and Rafaela Carrasco. The result is a flamenco suite designed for a large number of dancers that pays tribute to an innovative creator who gave a leap forward and was a breath of fresh air regarding flamenco.
The live broadcast of the rehearsals is starting at 2.30 pm on 29 April. After finishing, around 3.30 pm, our director Rubén Olmo and several dancers and masters of the Ballet Nacional de España will answer live the questions we have received through the social media.
Also, we joined Compañía Nacional de Danza (CND) to record a video that the Instituto Nacional de las Artes Escénicas y de la Música (INAEM) will circulate on Dance International Day. The video portrays the encounter of Spanish dance, classical ballet, and contemporary dance as we are convinced that dance is a cultural heritage that belongs to all of us, and we must get to know it in order to appreciate it. Ballet Nacional de España’s dancers Débora Martínez, Miriam Mendoza, José Manuel Benítez and Albert Hernández, and CND members Sara Lorés Ara, Miranda Silveira, Mario Galindo and Ángel García Molinero have conveyed this message through the movements of their bodies in a video that was recorded on different locations in Madrid Río.
