With an eye to rehearsals and the preproduction of the 2021 premieres, plus the preparation of the Invocación tours to start in October, the director of the Ballet Nacional de España, Rubén Olmo, goes over his first season as head of the company, cut short by Covid-19.
Manuel Reyes, Belén López and Marcos Morau, director of La Veronal, are the choreographers invited by Rubén Olmo to give the #BNEenMovimientoPerpetuo workshops in July. The workshops were streamed on the BNE social networks on 9, 24 and 31 July.
Antonio Ruiz Soler’s choreography, performed by the BNE in 2016, will be available to watch until 31 August. Also available is Homenaje a Antonia Mercé 'La Argentina' that Mariemma premiered in 1990 on the occasion of the one hundredth anniversary of the birth of her mistress.
Until September, when we can resume the tours that were postponed due to Covid-19, the Ballet Nacional de España wishes to keep in touch with the Spanish dance audience through its social networks, uploading new contents via streaming.
In addition to its premieres and tours, in 2020 the Ballet Nacional de España will boost the learning project it has been carrying out for three years to create new audiences. Among other activities, more schools and groups will visit the company’s home and the number of didactic workshops in schools will increase. It will also continue to use the new technologies to make Spanish dance more attractive to young people.
The premiere of Invocación will take place on 7 March at the Teatro Villamarta in Jerez de la Frontera (Cádiz). The first programme by Rubén Olmo as BNE director includes a tribute to bailaor and flamenco choreographer Mario Maya plus two shows never performed before, Jauleña and Invocación bolera. The BNE will also perform this programme in St. Petersburg on its first international tour in 2020.
The Ballet Nacional de España performed Electra from 28 to 30 December at the Teatro Real in Madrid before a full house. Choreographer Antonio Ruz, with the collaboration of Olga Pericet, brought together contemporary dance and flamenco to transport Greek tragedy to the Spanish rural world that captivated Lorca.
The BNE performed Electra at the Teatro Cervantes on 22nd and 23rd November with the special collaboration as guest artists of Sandra Carrasco and Antonio Najarro. This choreography was one of the high points of the renewed Danza Málaga series.
Ties of blood can bring tragedy to a family when mixed with revenge. Electra could not forget her father’s murder and turned into a myth. In Murcia, on 16 November The Ballet Nacional de España starts its first season under the directorship of Rubén Olmo with this choreography by Antonio Ruz in collaboration with Olga Pericet.
Despite being one of the great Spanish dance masters, the Córdoba dancer and choreographer Mario Maya had not been included in the Ballet Nacional de España until now.
The Ballet Nacional de España to perform Electra in Murcia, Málaga, and Madrid in the upcoming tours till the end of the year. It will also take part in the tribute to dancer and choreographer Javier Latorre in Córdoba.

Directed by Rubén Olmo, with the artistic assistance of Miguel Ángel Corbacho, the BNE cast is made up of 42 dancers, two cantaores [singers] and six musicians, in addition to six dance masters.
On 1 September dancer and choreographer Rubén Olmo (Seville, 1980) became director of the Ballet Nacional de España.
